Juicer Buying Guide
There are several different types of juicers available on the market, so selecting the one that is best for you may seem confusing. Most juicers will work fine for a variety of fruits and vegetables. However, some juicer types do not work as well for wheat grass or leafy greens. Some juicer types are versatile enough to create nut butters and milled grains.
Regardless of the type of juicer, they all have the same goal, which is to release the enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals contained in the juice. For a more detailed explanation, please see the Benefits of Juicing page. The table below explains the different juicer types.

Citrus Juicers
Citrus Juicers are the simplest type of juicer. While some models of citrcus juicers are manual or hand juicers, most are electric and they are used only for juicing citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit and the like.
Citrus Juicers average in price from about $15 to $40.

Centrifugal Juicers
Centrifugal juicers are probably the most common type of juicer. They are popular because they are the most affordable juicer type. They work by finely grating the fruits and vegetables into very small pieces and then spinning the pulp against a very fine mesh screen at high RPM. The centrifugal force extracts the juice from the pulp. They work great for just about any fruit or vegetable. However, they are not as efficient when trying to extract juice from herbs, leafy greens or wheat grass.
Most Centrifugal Juicers average in price from $100 to $200, with a few elite models as high as $250 to $350.

Single Gear Masticating Juicers
Single gear juicers have an auger-type gear that literally chews the fruit and vegetable fibers to release the juice. Masticating juicers are very capable when it comes to juicing most fruits and vegetables. They are more efficient than centrifugal juicers because they can generally extract more juice from the same amount of raw food than centrifugal juicers. As a result, the pulp comes out drier. Most masticating juicers also do a good job with leafy greens such as spinach, parsley, wheat grass and other herbs. We would like to note, however, that the Champion Juicer does not do as well with leafy greens and wheat grass.
Masticating juicers also do a slightly better job than centrifugal juicers at retaining some of the vitamins and enzymes. This is because they operate at lower RPMs than centrifugal juicers resulting in less heat and foam.
Another benefit to Masticating Juicers is that they are very versatile. For example, they can be used to create nut butters, baby food, sauces, and pates. They can also be used to grind up bananas and other fruit for making ice cream and sorbet.
Single Gear Masticating Juicers average in price from around $200 to $260.

Twin Gear Triturating Juicers
Triturating juicers offer the most benefits of all the juicer types. They are also the most expensive. They are the most efficient at delivering higher volumes of juice from fruits, vegetables, wheat grass, leafy greens and herbs. Because the operate at low RPMs, they produce less heat and foam than other types of juicers. This means that vital nutrients in the juice are not destroyed by heat or oxidation of the foam.
Triturating juicers have interlocking twin gears that grind the fruit and vegetables fibres to release the largest percentage of juice. They also work extremely well for homogenizing food to create nut butters, sauces, pates, baby food and fruit sorbets.
Twin Gear Triturating Juicers average in price from $350 to $550.

Wheatgrass Juicers
Wheatgrass juicers are made strictly for extracting juice from wheatgrass and other leafy greens. They can also be used for some soft fruits, such as grapes, but are not intended for extracting juice from most fruits and vegetables.
With the exception of the Champion Juicer, the single gear and twin gear models above will do a good job with wheatgrass, and leafy greens in addition to fruits and vegetables.
Wheatgrass Juicers average in price from $90 to $350 depending on whether they are manual wheatgrass juicers or whether they are power wheatgrass juicers.
